Double Vision: The Evolution of My Double Exposure Art

I found myself at a crossroads in my photography career. Digital had been my go-to, but something was missing—I felt like I’d hit a creative wall. Everything changed when I met Cameron, who was snapping these vibrant, contrast-rich pictures on an old LCA Russian camera. The results? Absolutely mesmerizing. His double exposures, especially, rekindled a fire in me. It was old-school meets modern art, and I couldn’t wait to dive in.

Eager to break free from the digital routine, I embraced film with open arms, experimenting with cellophane to manipulate negatives, rewinding and re-exposing film to create layers of imagery that were seamless and surprising. Those two years were a whirlwind of creativity. I used vintage cameras from Lomography, pushing boundaries and exploring every possibility film had to offer. The thrill of not knowing what I’d captured until the film was developed felt like Christmas every time.

One of my favorites from this era, a shot called On Top of the World, featured a BMX rider from the X Games. I photographed him first, then walked down to the beach and captured the ocean waves. Merging these two moments felt like a gamble, but it paid off beautifully—the rider looked as if he was doing a wheelie on top of a wave. This piece not only captured viewers’ imaginations but also earned a spot at the Museum of Art in Rio de Janeiro.

2011 was a big year. I put together my collection of double exposures and entered it in the RAW Austin exhibition, winning Photographer of the Year. Receiving such an award felt surreal—it was a nod to the path I had chosen, the path less trodden but incredibly rewarding.

Now, as film becomes a rarer and pricier medium, I’ve shifted mostly to digital, exploring Nikon’s in-camera double exposure settings. The magic hasn’t faded, though. My recent work from Camargue, France, continues to explore this blend of old and new techniques. Here, even in environments that weren’t visually stunning on their own, I found ways to weave magic into the mundane, transforming everyday scenes into painterly images that echo the spirit of Europe’s artistic giants.

As I prepare to unveil my latest series from France, I am excited to take you on a comprehensive visual journey that embodies my entire photographic experience. This collection is not just a showcase of beautiful landscapes and vibrant wildlife; it is a culmination of my lifelong passion for art, my mastery of double exposure techniques, and my embrace of digital’s vast possibilities. Each image, whether a striking single frame or a complex double exposure, reflects a theme that feels almost painterly, blending the abstract with the real to offer a fresh perspective. This body of work represents everything I have learned and loved about photography—its power to challenge, captivate, and tell stories in uniquely beautiful ways.
