Midnight Ghosts

The Camargue horses surge through the marsh, water exploding around them in a chaos of light and shadow. The dark backdrop pulls their white coats into sharp relief, giving the scene a chiaroscuro quality reminiscent of Caravaggio’s dramatic contrasts. The water hides their legs and blurs their outlines until they seem to hover, half-formed, between the real and the imagined.

In that split second, the familiar becomes otherworldly. The horses feel less like animals bound to earth and more like spirits breaking through the surface of a dream, their energy suspended in the air along with the spray.

Personal Reflection

Taking this photograph felt like watching a painting form in real time. The water hid the horses’ legs and their white coats glowed against the dark backdrop. It felt unreal, almost dreamlike.

When I edited it, I leaned into that feeling, drawing on the kind of dramatic contrast Caravaggio used to pull a subject from the shadows. I wanted the horses to feel suspended in that moment, their power and stillness sharing the same space. Building the image this way let me hold them between the world I saw and the world I imagined.
