Night-Mare
In this disorienting and surreal composition, “Night-Mare,” the lines between reality and nightmare blur as the familiar world of the Camargue is turned upside down—literally and figuratively. The imposing horns of a bull dominate the foreground, arching like the bars of a cage that entraps the viewer in an unsettling vision, reminiscent of Dalí’s surreal distortions. The stark contrast between light and shadow, the inversion of reflections, and the spectral elongation of the bull’s legs create an atmosphere where power dynamics are upended. The image suggests a dreamscape where the horse, typically the guardian of these lands, is now caught in a nightmare where the bull takes on an otherworldly dominance, reversing the roles of master and subject. This artwork invites the viewer to explore a space where fears manifest as overpowering specters, altering the balance of the natural order.

Personal Reflection:
At the start of this journey, the weather really threw me off course. It rained for the first four or five days, and as panic began to set in, I realized I had to adapt. The rain pushed me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to think creatively in ways I might not have otherwise. This is when I embraced double exposures—transforming the ordinary into something surreal.
Looking back, I’m thankful for that challenge. Had the weather been perfect, I might have stayed in “safe mode” and missed the opportunity to push the boundaries of my creativity.
“Night-Mare” is a reflection of this journey. The image blurs the lines between reality and nightmare, where the familiar world of the Camargue is turned upside down—both literally and figuratively.
This piece is one of my favorites, not because it’s easy to appreciate, but because it represents a moment of artistic growth—a moment where I let go of control and allowed the process to guide me into creating something entirely new. “Night-Mare” embodies the fear and fascination that lie just beneath the surface, both in nature and within ourselves. It reminds me that profound art can emerge if I’m willing to venture into the unknown.
