It was her eyes. Her glance and presence seemed to hold stories of a mythology as ancient as her tribe. I found myself momentarily disoriented, trying to make sense of the scene before me. The way her fingers clasped the blanket wrapped over the gourd created a surreal feel, like the oracles of ancient myths. The feeling of visual confusion is one of my favorite feelings; it’s like a mental rollercoaster ride, and I truly enjoy images that create this.

Oracle Photography

It was her eyes. Her glance and presence seemed to hold stories of a mythology as ancient as her tribe. I found myself momentarily disoriented, trying to make sense of the scene before me. The way her fingers clasped the blanket wrapped over the gourd created a surreal feel, like the oracles of ancient myths. The feeling of visual confusion is one of my favorite feelings; it’s like a mental rollercoaster ride, and I truly enjoy images that create this.

I chose a grass hut as the backdrop to keep the focus solely on her. Shooting from a low angle, I aimed to convey her strength and elegance. Her face was painted with white and yellow pigments sourced from the nearby river, and a tiny red plastic flower rested between her lips. That small, modern detail contrasted with her traditional attire, symbolizing the outside influences reaching her remote community.

Setting up the shot required careful adjustments—moving equipment, fine-tuning the lighting, composing the frame. Photography for me is about timing, connection, and patience. Every element needs to come together. Capturing this moment was about more than the technical aspects; it was about the connection we shared, however brief. Experiences like this remind me why I travel and seek out unique stories through my lens.
