The Suri Sprite

Sprite Photography

I met a young Suri girl in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley who stood out to me. Her face was painted with patterns made from clay and charcoal collected from the river nearby. She had arranged small white flowers and leaves around her face, something she picked herself from the surrounding land.

There was a quiet intensity in her gaze. She wasn’t posing or performing—just standing there naturally. The Suri don’t have many mirrors, so their face painting is mostly a communal effort, done with friends and family. It’s a part of their everyday life.

Photography that tugs at the threads of our shared humanity

My hope is to tell stories that help people see the light within themselves and in others. Through my lens, I aim to capture the beauty that endures, even in the toughest times, and the truths that need to be faced. I believe that when we do this, we create a more compassionate, brighter world.
