The Arbore people live in the southern Omo Valley, where cattle, community, and spiritual tradition shape most of daily life. They’re known for being calm and welcoming, even to outsiders passing through this remote part of Ethiopia. Much of their guidance comes from spiritual leaders called Qawot, who are looked to during illness, conflict, and changes in the land.
While I was there, one woman stood out to me right away. She was wrapped in a dark cloth, standing quietly near the edge of the village. She held herself with a kind of peace that drew me in. Her necklaces, long strands of beads in different sizes and colors, reflected details about her age and her place in the community.
When I think of her, I see her as Saint Arbore because she had a presence that felt special and spiritually regal. She seemed deeply connected to her people and the land around her.
