Reflections of the Camargue
A Limited Collection
For years, the iconic Camargue horses, symbols of both power and grace, have captivated me. Revered since ancient times, these majestic creatures have been celebrated not only by Greek traders but also by illustrious figures such as Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte, who admired their endurance and wild beauty. When I traveled to southern France to capture their majesty, my goal was to present them from a fresh perspective. What I didn’t expect was how the Camargue itself would shape my creative journey, compelling me to remain open and responsive to the inspiration flowing from its landscapes, weather, and vibrant life.
During my stay, relentless rain reshaped my plans, compelling me to adapt and explore new artistic avenues. This led me to experiment with double exposures, transforming ordinary scenes into something truly extraordinary. These moments of forced adaptation deepened my appreciation for the region’s diversity, from the majestic horses to the dedicated Gardians and the beautiful birdlife.
This collection draws deep inspiration from Salvador Dalí, whose surrealistic influence is evident in my use of double exposures that meld the real with the surreal. By blending two distinct images, I create a realm where the familiar is seen in a fresh way. These images invite us to linger in that confusion, allowing us to discover something profound, much like stepping into a forbidden space. To maintain a consistent aesthetic throughout, I edited my images with a Baroque feel, particularly evident in the use of dramatic tones and clouds, aiming to create a painterly quality that unifies the body of work.
‘Reflections of the Camargue’ is designed to shift perspectives and enrich our understanding of art’s possibilities. Each piece, whether a straightforward capture or a complex double exposure, strives to engage and move us, revealing the vast beauty of the Camargue.
